Wesfarmers continue to open stores during lock down

Wesfarmers have voiced their dissatisfaction with the advice that non-essential retailers should close their stores in greater Sydney as it sees their business contains items that are of an essential nature. With the expanding number of cases in New South Wales, people are being urged to only shop for absolutely essential items to reduce the risk of the delta variant of Coronavirus spreading.
Wesfarmers has some of the biggest and busiest retail stores in the country as owners of Bunnings, Kmart, Target and Officeworks. Despite having a Bunnings, Kmart and Officeworks stores being identified as exposure sites, Wesfarmers have made the decision to keep stores open to serve customers.
Wesfarmers has noted that many of it’s stores are fulfilment hubs for online shopping orders that request click and collect. Therefore there is a requirement that the stores stay open to fulfill these orders.
Bunnings is considered one of the most essential stores as many of their products are used for emergency maintenance of homes and businesses and therefore critical for customers. Wesfarmers are trying to mitigate the public’s concern by emphasising that strict processes that staff follow ensure customer numbers are controlled and covid safe.
Online shopping has been promoted by all the big retailers and store visits are only encouraged if necessary for items that are required immediately.
